Overview of South Riding

South Riding occupies an enviable position in Thurlestone, with views stretching across the golf course towards Thurlestone Rock and the sea. The beach and South West Coast Path are only around 200 metres away, making this an excellent choice for families and friends who want to spend much of their holiday outdoors and close to the coast.

Sleeping 12 across six bedrooms, the house has the space and flexibility needed for several generations or two families sharing. Four bedrooms occupy the first floor, while two twin rooms tucked into the second-floor eaves are particularly well suited to children and teenagers.

Downstairs, the large lounge and dining area looks directly towards the garden and coast, with full-width doors opening onto a covered terrace. A separate sun room gives part of the group somewhere quieter to watch television or relax, while the kitchen has another dining table large enough for all 12 guests.

The gardens are another highlight. Mature lawns slope towards the sea-facing side of the house, with plenty of room for summer afternoons outside and a terrace for group meals and barbecues. Thurlestone Marsh lies beyond, bringing birdlife and a natural outlook into the view.

There is little need to organise every day around the car. The village shop, beach, golf course and coast path are all within a few hundred metres, with the pub also an easy walk away. Bantham, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge and Salcombe add plenty of options when the group wants to explore farther afield.

For a large group looking for a classic South Devon seaside stay, South Riding brings together sea views, excellent walking, beaches and village life in a particularly convenient setting.

Who is South Riding Best For?

South Riding works especially well for family groups because its bedrooms are naturally divided between adults and younger guests.

The four first-floor rooms include three doubles and a twin, while the two second-floor twin bedrooms sit together in the eaves and have a bathroom on the same level. Children or teenagers can therefore have their own part of the house without being separated completely from the group.

Golfers have Thurlestone Golf Club almost on the doorstep, while walkers can join the South West Coast Path within minutes. The proximity of the beach also makes spontaneous swims and evening walks easy rather than something that needs planning.

  • South West Coast Path close to the house
  • Six bedrooms sleeping 12
  • Two separate living areas

Bedrooms & Bathrooms at South Riding

South Riding has six bedrooms arranged across the first and second floors.

The first floor has two super king rooms, a king-size room and a twin, while the two bedrooms on the top floor each have twin beds and work particularly well for younger members of the group.

Group Accommodation Layout

Bedroom Sleeping Arrangement Bathroom
Bedroom 1 Super king-size bed Ensuite bathroom
Bedroom 2 Super king-size bed Family bathroom nearby
Bedroom 3 Two 3ft single beds Family bathroom nearby
Bedroom 4 King-size bed Shower room adjacent
Bedroom 5 Two 3ft single beds Second-floor bathroom nearby
Bedroom 6 Two 3ft single beds Second-floor bathroom nearby

The principal bedroom opens onto a full-width balcony and enjoys uninterrupted views towards the coast. Its ensuite includes both a bath and separate shower.

Bedroom 2 is another sea-facing super king room, while Bedrooms 5 and 6 are tucked into the eaves and each have twin beds, storage and their own playful character.

How does the layout work for a group of 12?

Two super king rooms and the king-size bedroom suit three couples, while the three twin bedrooms provide six separate beds for children, teenagers or friends.

Families sharing the property may particularly appreciate the two second-floor twin rooms, which sit together beside their own bathroom and effectively create a separate children's or teenagers' floor.

The first-floor twin room offers another option for younger children who need to be closer to parents.

Bathroom Layout

South Riding has four bathrooms or shower rooms plus a ground-floor cloakroom.

  • Ensuite bathroom to the principal bedroom with bath and separate shower
  • First-floor family bathroom with bath and separate shower
  • First-floor shower room
  • Second-floor bathroom with bath and separate shower
  • Ground-floor cloakroom

The bathrooms are spread across both bedroom floors, which is particularly helpful when the house is occupied by the full group.

Location & Things to Do Near South Riding

South Riding is exceptionally well placed for enjoying Thurlestone and the wider South Hams on foot. The beach, golf course and South West Coast Path are all around 200 metres away, while the village shop and pub are close enough for everyday essentials and relaxed meals without driving. View our great selection of Thurlestone holiday cottages for group holidays here.

Thurlestone Sands and neighbouring South Milton Sands form one of the most attractive stretches of beach in the area. The sheltered bay has sand, rock pools and clear water, with the natural arch of Thurlestone Rock immediately offshore. Kayaking, paddleboarding and other watersports are popular here, while the beach café provides an easy stop for lunch or an evening drink.

Immediately behind the coast lies Thurlestone Marsh, an important local wildlife area and a particularly good spot for birdwatching. The gardens at South Riding look towards the marsh, so the coastal landscape feels very much part of the stay.

Thurlestone Golf Club is almost on the doorstep. Its course combines links and clifftop golf, while the club also has tennis courts and a clubhouse overlooking the surrounding coastline.

Walkers can follow the South West Coast Path east towards South Milton Sands and Hope Cove or head west towards Bantham. Some sections are steep, but the views across Bigbury Bay and the surrounding headlands make the effort worthwhile.

Bantham is also one of South Devon's best-known surfing beaches, with a broad expanse of sand and the River Avon alongside. Hope Cove offers a different atmosphere, with two beaches, cafés and pubs clustered around the old fishing village.

For larger shops and restaurants, Kingsbridge is approximately five miles away, while Salcombe is around six miles from the house for sailing, boat trips, independent shops and waterfront dining.
