Overview of Longstone

Longstone occupies an enviable position on the Yarmer Estate, with the open ground of Thurlestone Golf Course creating uninterrupted views towards the sea. The recently renovated house has a contemporary coastal feel, but its strongest feature is the way the principal rooms connect with the landscape outside.

The kitchen, dining area and sitting room form the main social heart of the house. The kitchen is particularly well specified for a group of 12, with a central island, induction hob, two ovens, microwave, two dishwashers, large fridge freezer and separate drinks fridge. There is also a dedicated coffee area with a Nespresso machine and Quooker tap.

Alongside the kitchen, the dining area has space for up to 14, so there is room for the entire group around one table rather than dividing meals between separate areas.

Large sliding doors connect the sitting room with the front terrace and bring the coastal outlook into the house. The living space has generous sofas and armchairs, a 75-inch television with Sky and a collection of books and games.

Three of the six bedrooms are on the ground floor, including a super king-size suite with direct access to the sea-facing terrace. Combined with level parking beside the front door, this makes Longstone worth considering for mixed-generation groups where one or more guests would benefit from avoiding stairs.

Outside, the broad porcelain terraces substantially increase the usable group space. A dining area seats 14, while separate rattan seating creates a more relaxed place for drinks and sea views. Lawns and landscaped garden areas extend beyond the terraces.

Who is Longstone Best For?

Longstone is particularly useful for groups whose accommodation requirements span several generations. Three ground-floor bedrooms reduce the need for everyone to use the stairs, while the level parking space beside the entrance helps with arrivals and day-to-day access.

Golfers have an obvious advantage, with Thurlestone Golf Club only a few minutes away and the course stretching between the house and coastline.

It is equally strong for groups who prefer to leave the cars behind once they arrive. Beaches, the golf club, village shop, pub and coast path are all reachable on foot, while longer walks open up Bantham, South Milton and Hope Cove.

The oversized dining area and terrace also make Longstone particularly suitable for family celebrations where shared meals are an important part of the stay.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms at Longstone

Longstone's six bedrooms are divided evenly between the ground and first floors, creating a particularly useful arrangement for several family units sharing the property.

Three super king-size bedrooms provide accommodation for couples, while three twin rooms offer six separate single beds. Four bathrooms are positioned around the two sleeping areas.

Group Accommodation Layout

Bedroom Sleeping Arrangement Bathroom
Bedroom 1 Two 3ft single beds Ground-floor family bathroom nearby
Bedroom 2 Two 3ft single beds Ground-floor family bathroom nearby
Bedroom 3 6ft super king-size bed Ensuite bathroom
Bedroom 4 6ft super king-size bed Ensuite bathroom
Bedroom 5 6ft super king-size bed First-floor shower room nearby
Bedroom 6 Two 3ft single beds First-floor shower room nearby

The two ground-floor twin rooms both have built-in storage, dressing areas and sea views. They share a substantial bathroom with bath and separate walk-in shower.

The ground-floor super king suite has its own television, sea views and doors directly onto the main terrace. Its ensuite includes both a bath and walk-in shower.

Upstairs, another super king bedroom has a private bathroom, while the remaining double and twin rooms share a separate shower room.

How does the layout work for a group of 12?

The permanent beds accommodate 12 without sofa beds or temporary additions.

Three super king bedrooms give couples plenty of choice, while the three twin rooms make the house particularly flexible for children, teenagers, friends or adults who prefer separate beds.

The ground-floor accommodation can operate as a useful sleeping zone in its own right. Grandparents or guests who prefer to avoid stairs could use the ensuite suite, while children or another family unit occupy the neighbouring twins.

Upstairs, two further double rooms and another twin provide a similar mixture of accommodation for the rest of the group.

Bathroom Layout

Longstone has four substantial bathrooms.

  • Ground-floor family bathroom with bath and separate walk-in shower
  • Ground-floor ensuite with bath and separate walk-in shower
  • First-floor ensuite with bath and separate walk-in shower
  • First-floor shower room with large walk-in shower

Dual basins in several of the larger bathrooms are a useful detail when the property is occupied by a full group.

    Facilities & Information at Longstone

The practical facilities at Longstone have clearly been planned around larger-group use. There is more duplication than in a typical holiday cottage, particularly in the kitchen and utility areas, reducing some of the usual pressure points when 12 people are staying together.

Two dishwashers help with catering for a full house, while separate food and drinks refrigeration provides additional capacity. The island incorporates the induction hob and creates a central preparation area where several people can cook without crowding the main worktops.

A boot and utility room close to the entrance contains the washing machine and tumble dryer. There is also a separate heated drying room, particularly useful after wet walks, days on the beach or watersports.

The garage contains an additional chest freezer and enough clear floor space to be used for activities such as yoga.

Outside, the main terrace is furnished for both dining and relaxed seating. An electric barbecue is provided, and steps descend towards the lawned garden below.

Location & Things to Do Near Longstone

Thurlestone occupies a particularly attractive section of the South Devon coast, where sandy beaches, golf links and the South West Coast Path sit within a compact area. Longstone's position on the Yarmer Estate in Thurlsestone places these landscapes directly in front of the house rather than requiring a drive to reach them.

Thurlestone Rock is the defining local landmark, a natural sea arch standing offshore between Thurlestone Sands and South Milton Sands. The coastline around it combines sandy stretches with rocky areas and pools exposed at lower tide, giving families plenty to explore beyond straightforward beach days.

South Milton Sands is managed by the National Trust and is particularly useful for paddleboarding, kayaking and swimming when conditions allow. A beach café provides food and drinks close to the shoreline, while the coast path creates an easy way to continue towards Hope Cove.

In the opposite direction, Bantham is one of South Devon's best-known surfing beaches. Its broad expanse of sand sits at the mouth of the River Avon, with views across to Burgh Island. Surfing lessons and equipment hire are available locally, and the walk from Thurlestone provides a scenic alternative to driving.

Golf is unusually prominent here. Thurlestone Golf Club's 18-hole course follows the coastline, combining links-style holes with extensive sea views. Tennis is also available through the club.

For food and everyday supplies, Thurlestone has a village shop and Post Office as well as the Village Inn and dining at Thurlestone Hotel. Kingsbridge, approximately four miles away, adds supermarkets, independent shops, cafés and a cinema.

Salcombe is also within easy driving distance for sailing, boat trips and waterside shopping. Alternatively, groups wanting to stay closer to home can follow the coast path towards Hope Cove, where two beaches, pubs and cafés create an easy walking destination.
