Sleeps 10 | 6 bedrooms | 4 bathrooms | 3 living areas | Estuary views | Walk to town

Overview of The Ridings

The Ridings is a wonderfully spacious Salcombe holiday home with one of its greatest assets immediately apparent from the moment you arrive: far-reaching views across the estuary towards Mill Bay and the hills beyond. Set on the hillside between Salcombe town centre and North Sands, it gives groups an excellent balance between space, scenery and being able to enjoy much of the area on foot, see more group holiday houses in Salcombe here.

Sleeping ten across six bedrooms, the house works particularly well for extended families, several couples and groups gathering for a celebration. Three separate reception areas mean there is no need for everyone to share the same room throughout the stay, while the large kitchen and dining space provides a sociable heart to the house for breakfasts, evening meals and relaxed nights in.

The location is a major reason to choose The Ridings. Salcombe's harbour, independent shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs are only a short walk away, while North Sands offers an easy option for beach days without getting into the car. From there, the coast continues towards South Sands, Bolt Head and some of the most rewarding walking in the South Hams.

Back at the house, the sunny patio and tiered garden provide plenty of outdoor space for summer meals and barbecues, with the estuary setting adding a real sense of place. Several bedrooms also enjoy the views, so the Salcombe scenery remains part of the stay even when guests are relaxing indoors.

Private parking for several cars is another valuable feature in Salcombe, particularly for a larger group. For families and friends looking for generous accommodation close to both the town and beach, The Ridings makes an excellent base for enjoying this part of South Devon.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms at The Ridings

The Ridings has six bedrooms arranged mainly across the ground and first floors, offering a useful combination of king-size, double, twin and single beds.

Several of the bedrooms look directly across the Salcombe Estuary, while the mix of room types works well for families and groups where not everyone wants a double bed.

Group Accommodation Layout

Bedroom Sleeping Arrangement Bathroom
Bedroom 1 5ft king-size bed Family bathroom and shower room nearby
Bedroom 2 5ft king-size bed Family bathroom and shower room nearby
Bedroom 3 4ft 6in double bed Family bathroom and shower room nearby
Bedroom 4 Two 3ft single beds Family bathroom and shower room nearby
Bedroom 5 Two 3ft single beds First-floor facilities nearby
Bedroom 6 3ft single bed Accessed through Bedroom 5

Bedrooms 1 and 2 both enjoy estuary views and have their own wash basins.

Bedroom 5 also looks across the water, while Bedroom 6 is reached through Bedroom 5, making these two rooms particularly suitable for parents with a child, teenagers or younger family members.

How does the layout work for a group of 10?

The mix of two king rooms, one double, two twins and a single gives groups plenty of flexibility when allocating bedrooms.

Three couples could use the larger double rooms, leaving the twins and single room for children or other family members. Alternatively, the twin accommodation works well for groups of friends who prefer separate beds.

The connecting arrangement between Bedrooms 5 and 6 is particularly useful for a family unit, but is worth considering when deciding room allocations for an all-adult group.

Bathroom Layout

Bathroom facilities are spread across the sleeping accommodation.

  • Family bathroom with bath and separate shower
  • Separate family shower room
  • Additional WC facilities
  • Wash basins in several bedrooms

The combination gives groups more flexibility during busy mornings, particularly when several couples or family units are sharing the house.

Location & Things to Do Near The Ridings

The Ridings is exceptionally well placed for enjoying Salcombe without having to choose between the town and the beach. The house sits on the hillside between central Salcombe and North Sands, with the estuary spread out below and many of the area's best-known places accessible on foot.

North Sands is the closest beach and a favourite with families, with sand at lower tide, rock pools and sheltered water for swimming. From here, Cliff Road continues towards South Sands, where another sandy beach, watersports and a seasonal passenger ferry provide an easy link back to central Salcombe.

Walkers can continue beyond South Sands towards Bolt Head and East Soar. This section of the South West Coast Path passes through some of the most dramatic scenery around Salcombe, with rugged cliffs, secluded coves and wide views across the open sea. A popular circular route from East Soar to Bolt Head covers approximately 4.5 miles.

Salcombe itself has plenty to fill slower days. Fore Street and the waterfront are lined with independent shops, galleries, cafés, pubs and restaurants, while the harbour offers sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and boat trips.

The passenger ferry across the estuary to East Portlemouth opens up another collection of sandy beaches. Mill Bay is particularly attractive, with woodland immediately behind the sand and walking routes continuing towards Gara Rock and Prawle Point.

For groups who want to explore farther afield, Kingsbridge is around six miles away, while Hope Cove, Thurlestone and South Milton Sands are all within easy driving distance. The variety of beaches, coastal walks, watersports and places to eat makes Salcombe especially well suited to mixed groups where everyone may want something different from the holiday.
