Overview of Windrush
Windrush occupies an elevated site in South Huish, giving the house exceptional views towards Thurlestone Rock, Burgh Island and the surrounding South Devon coastline. With six bedrooms and accommodation for 12, it is large enough for several family units to share without the house feeling dependent on a single communal space. The main lounge takes advantage of the outlook through dual-aspect windows and doors onto the front terrace. Comfortable seating surrounds an open fire, while the adjoining dining room has a large table for the full group. A sideboard stocked with games and an additional drinks fridge make this area especially useful for long evening meals and relaxed group gatherings.
The kitchen is practical rather than showpiece-led, with an electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge freezer. A separate utility area houses the washing machine and tumble dryer, while the rear conservatory is particularly useful after beach days, with tiled floors and enough space for wetsuits, beach equipment and muddy paws.
Outside is where Windrush becomes particularly distinctive. The rear garden is broad, enclosed and lawned, while extensive terraces wrap around the house. Below the main level is a fully enclosed heated swimming pool area with seating and sun loungers.
The property’s elevated position does mean there are steps between the parking area, terraces and entrance, and the front terrace sits above the driveway. For families with younger children, the pool area is enclosed but the raised terrace and garden ponds still require supervision.

Who is Windrush Best For?
Windrush works particularly well for family groups who expect to spend as much time outdoors as inside. The private pool, large lawn and multiple terraces give different generations plenty of space, while the beaches and coast path nearby mean active days can start without a long drive.
The bedroom arrangement is also useful for mixed groups. There are larger double rooms for couples, twin and bunk rooms for children and a separate two-bedroom section at the rear of the ground floor that can give one family unit a little more independence.
For groups planning a summer holiday, the combination of private pool and nearby beaches gives more flexibility than relying on the coast alone. Outside the main swimming season, the sea views, open fire and coastal walking keep the property appealing for spring and autumn gatherings.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms at Windrush
Windrush has six bedrooms arranged mainly across the ground floor, with a large principal suite on the first floor. The layout gives groups a mixture of doubles, twins and bunks rather than six similar rooms.
Group Accommodation Layout
| Bedroom | Sleeping Arrangement | Bathroom |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom 1 | Super king-size bed | Family shower room nearby |
| Bedroom 2 | Bunk beds | Family shower room nearby |
| Bedroom 3 | Twin 3ft beds | Family shower room nearby |
| Bedroom 4 | Two 2ft 6in single beds | Bathroom shared with Bedroom 5 |
| Bedroom 5 | King-size bed | Bathroom shared with Bedroom 4 |
| Bedroom 6 | Super king-size bed | Adjoining private bathroom |
Bedroom 1 opens onto the sea-facing terrace, making it one of the strongest ground-floor choices for adults.
Bedrooms 4 and 5 form a more self-contained section beyond the rear conservatory. Bedroom 4 leads through a bathroom to Bedroom 5, so this pairing is particularly suitable for parents with children or another family unit rather than unrelated adults wanting complete privacy.
The first-floor master suite has a super king-size bed and wide picture windows looking towards Thurlestone Rock and the sea.
How does the layout work for a group of 12?
The permanent beds accommodate all 12 guests without relying on sofa beds or temporary sleeping arrangements.
The mix of two super king rooms, a king room, two twin rooms and one bunk room suits multi-generational groups particularly well. Couples can take the larger doubles, while children and teenagers have several twin and bunk options.
The rear pair of bedrooms deserves particular consideration when allocating rooms because access between them passes through the bathroom. In the right family setup, however, this can be a useful semi-private section of the house.
Bathroom Layout
Windrush has three bathrooms plus an additional ground-floor WC.
- Ground-floor family shower room serving Bedrooms 1 to 3
- Bathroom with shower over the bath positioned between Bedrooms 4 and 5
- First-floor bathroom adjoining the master bedroom
- Separate ground-floor cloakroom
The bathrooms are distributed around the different sleeping zones rather than grouped in one part of the property.

Location & Things to Do Near Windrush
South Huish places Windrush in one of the strongest coastal locations in the South Hams, between Hope Cove and Thurlestone and close to a succession of sandy beaches linked by the South West Coast Path.
South Milton Sands is one of the closest and most useful beaches for families. Managed by the National Trust, it has a long sweep of sand, rock pools and clear water, with Thurlestone Rock forming the distinctive offshore landmark. The sheltered bay is popular for paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing, and the coast path runs directly through the site towards Hope Cove in one direction and Thurlestone in the other.
Hope Cove offers a different atmosphere, with two sandy beaches, a historic fishing-village setting and a good choice of cafés, pubs and places to eat. Inner Hope is more sheltered, while Mouthwell Sands combines sand with rocky areas that work well for rock pooling. The village also makes a good starting point for longer coast walks towards Bolt Tail and Salcombe.
Thurlestone is known for its beaches, coastal scenery and golf course, while Bigbury-on-Sea and Burgh Island make an excellent day trip further west. At low tide, Burgh Island can be reached on foot across the sand; when the tide covers the causeway, the sea tractor provides the memorable alternative crossing.
Kingsbridge is around ten minutes away by car and is the practical hub for supermarkets, independent shops, restaurants and a small cinema. Salcombe is also within easy reach for harbour views, boat trips, sailing and waterfront dining.
For nature lovers, the wetlands around South Huish attract significant birdlife, while the wider South Devon National Landscape provides a strong mix of cliff walks, sandy coves, farmland and estuary scenery.
