Overview of Wavelet
Wavelet occupies an elevated position just behind Challaborough Beach, giving families the unusual convenience of being able to return home easily between swims, beach sessions and meals. The sandy bay is approximately 100 metres away, while Bigbury-on-Sea can be reached on foot around the coast, see all of our large cottages near Bigbury-on-Sea here.
Inside, the layout provides substantially more separation than a single open-plan living space. The first sitting room has comfortable sofas and chairs arranged around an open fire, along with a large Smart TV, books and games. A second lounge has three sofas, another Smart TV and patio doors opening directly into the garden.
The kitchen and dining area sits between these social spaces and is equipped for a full group of ten. A large Smeg electric range has an induction hob, main oven and smaller second oven, while a dishwasher, combination microwave, fridge and Nespresso machine cover the remaining everyday requirements. The dining table seats all ten guests.
Two bedrooms are on the ground floor, including a king-size suite with its own dressing room and private shower room. The remaining three bedrooms are upstairs, where the principal king-size room opens onto a balcony overlooking the coast.
Outside, the gated garden combines lawn, paved terrace and ample space for beach equipment. An outdoor shower and hose are especially useful here, allowing sandy children, dogs, boards and wetsuits to be rinsed before they come inside.

Who is Wavelet Best For?
Wavelet is particularly well suited to multi-generational families because a substantial part of the accommodation is available without using the stairs.
The ground floor contains the kitchen, dining areas, both lounges, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. One bedroom has its own ensuite and dressing space, giving grandparents or guests with more limited mobility the option of staying largely on one level.
Families with children also benefit from having a second sitting room and a secure-style outdoor space rather than everyone sharing a single lounge.
Its location makes the property strongest for groups who expect to spend much of their stay around the beach and coast. Challaborough, Bigbury-on-Sea, Burgh Island and the South West Coast Path can all be explored without beginning every day with a car journey.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms at Wavelet
Wavelet has five bedrooms split between the ground and first floors. The arrangement includes three double rooms, one flexible super king or twin room and a bunk bedroom.
This combination gives families useful flexibility without relying on temporary beds.
Group Accommodation Layout
| Bedroom | Sleeping Arrangement | Bathroom |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom 1 | 5ft king-size bed | Ensuite shower room |
| Bedroom 2 | Bunk beds | Ground-floor family bathroom nearby |
| Bedroom 3 | 5ft king-size bed | First-floor family bathroom nearby |
| Bedroom 4 | 6ft super king or twin beds | First-floor family bathroom nearby |
| Bedroom 5 | 4ft 6in double bed | First-floor family bathroom nearby |
Bedroom 1 is on the ground floor and leads through its own dressing room to the ensuite. The dressing area is also large enough to accommodate a cot when required.
The bunk room sits on the same floor, close to the main family bathroom.
Upstairs, the principal king-size bedroom has a private balcony and sea views. Bedroom 4 can be prepared as either a super king or twin when requested before arrival.
How does the layout work for a group of 10?
All ten guests have permanent sleeping accommodation.
Three conventional double rooms can accommodate three couples, while the flexible super king room can either take another couple or two individual guests. The bunk room provides the final two sleeping spaces and is naturally suited to children.
For a multi-generational group, the ground-floor king-size suite can give older relatives their own private facilities while parents and children occupy the remaining rooms.
The bunk bedroom's ground-floor position also allows a family with younger children to sleep on the same level if they use Bedroom 1.
Bathroom Layout
Wavelet has three bathrooms.
- Ground-floor ensuite shower room serving Bedroom 1
- Ground-floor family bathroom with bath and separate shower
- First-floor family bathroom with bath and handheld shower
Having two bathrooms downstairs adds considerably to the usefulness of the ground-floor sleeping arrangement.

Wavelet is equipped particularly well for beach holidays, with practical features that go beyond the kitchen and bedrooms.
The utility room contains a washing machine, tumble dryer and a second fridge freezer, giving a full house additional food storage and straightforward laundry facilities.
Outside, an outdoor shower and separate hose provide somewhere to deal with sand before entering the house. There is also space for storing surfboards, bicycles and other beach equipment.

Location & Things to Do Near Wavelet
Challaborough is a small coastal village on Bigbury Bay, backed by hills and fronted by a sandy beach that becomes the natural focus of a stay at Wavelet. The shoreline is particularly popular with families, bodyboarders and surfers, with rock pools appearing as the tide retreats and seasonal lifeguard cover adding reassurance during busier periods.
One of the strongest features of the location is how easily the coastline can be explored on foot. The South West Coast Path passes directly through Challaborough, connecting the village with Bigbury-on-Sea in one direction and Ringmore and Ayrmer Cove in the other.
Bigbury-on-Sea lies around the headland and is home to one of South Devon's largest expanses of sand. At low tide the beach connects with Burgh Island, allowing visitors to walk across the causeway. When the sea covers the sand, the distinctive elevated sea tractor provides an alternative crossing when operating.
Burgh Island itself makes an unusual destination for a short excursion. The island is known for its Art Deco hotel and links with Agatha Christie, while the historic Pilchard Inn provides somewhere to stop beside the water. A short circular walk around the island gives broad views across Bigbury Bay.
Heading west from Challaborough opens up a quieter stretch of coast. The South West Coast Path passes Ayrmer Cove and the cliffs around Ringmore, with a 6.5-mile circular route linking Bigbury, Ringmore and Challaborough for groups wanting a more substantial walk.
The coast is also strong for watersports. Bigbury-on-Sea has surf tuition and equipment hire, while the sandy beaches around the Avon estuary provide opportunities for surfing, paddleboarding and kayaking when conditions allow.
For supplies and meals further inland, Modbury is approximately five miles away, while Kingsbridge offers a wider range of supermarkets, independent shops, cafés and restaurants.
