Overview of Captain’s House
Captain’s House is made for occasions when getting everyone together is just as important as the destination itself. Sleeping 22 across the Main House and Coach House, it gives large families and groups the rare combination of generous communal space, plenty of bedrooms and one of the most unusual settings in Essex, view more large holiday houses for group holidays in Essex here.
The house sits right beside the Blackwater Estuary on Osea Island, with direct access to one of the island’s shingle beaches. Days can begin with a walk beside the water, move on to swimming or games and end around the fire pit as the sun drops over the estuary.
Inside, the Main House has two large living rooms with log burners, a substantial kitchen and a dining room where all 22 guests can sit together. That makes it a natural choice for birthdays, reunions and celebrations where shared meals are at the heart of the stay.
The Coach House sits around 50 yards away and adds further bedrooms and bathrooms, giving part of the group a little extra privacy without feeling separate from the main gathering.
Beyond the house, guests can make use of Osea Island’s shared facilities, including the outdoor pool, cinema room, games room and tennis court. The seasonal island pub adds another option for relaxed drinks and meals without needing to leave the island.
For groups looking for somewhere memorable, Captain’s House offers much more than a large place to sleep. The waterside position, private island setting and range of things to do make the stay feel like an event in its own right.

Most of the bedrooms are traditional doubles, while two of the larger Main House bedrooms each have two double beds and sleep four.
That arrangement works especially well for families, teenagers or close friends who are happy to share a larger room.
The Coach House is useful for guests who would like a little more privacy from the main household, while the ensuite provision there makes it particularly comfortable for couples.

There are seven bathrooms across the two buildings.
The Main House includes a mixture of ensuite and family bathrooms, several with roll-top baths or separate showers.
All three Coach House bedrooms have their own ensuite shower rooms.

Location & Things to Do Near Captain’s House
Osea Island sits in the Blackwater Estuary near Maldon, surrounded by water, salt marsh and open skies. The island covers around 550 acres and feels completely different from a conventional coastal village, with quiet lanes, private beaches and several miles of shoreline to explore.
The tidal causeway makes arriving part of the experience. It appears at low tide and disappears beneath the estuary again as the water rises, so crossing times become part of the rhythm of the holiday.
Once on the island, there is little need to leave. Walking and cycling routes weave through meadows and along the shoreline, while the private beaches are ideal for paddling, beachcombing and sea swimming when conditions allow.
The shared outdoor pool gives families another option in warmer months, while the cinema and games room are useful when the weather turns. Tennis and other outdoor games give larger groups plenty to do without needing to organise separate day trips.
The Blackwater Estuary is also an important wildlife habitat. Brent geese, waders and other estuary birds are regular sights, while the mix of marsh, meadow and shoreline makes simple walks around the island surprisingly varied.
For a mainland day out, Maldon is the obvious choice. The town is known for Hythe Quay and its historic Thames sailing barges, while Promenade Park offers riverside walks and family activities.
Captain’s House is therefore best enjoyed as a destination in itself. The island setting, beach access, leisure facilities and waterside atmosphere give large groups plenty to fill a stay without constantly packing everyone into cars.
