Location & Things to Do Near Hook Sands

Hook Sands sits directly beside Sandbanks Beach, one of Dorset's best-known stretches of coastline. The beach has soft golden sand, seasonal RNLI lifeguards, showers, cafés and family facilities, so it is easy to spend full days beside the sea without travelling anywhere else.

The wider peninsula gives groups a choice between the open coast and the calmer waters of Poole Harbour. The harbour is a popular base for sailing, paddleboarding, windsurfing and kayaking, with local operators offering lessons and equipment hire for different ability levels.

The Sandbanks chain ferry is close by and makes exploring the Isle of Purbeck particularly easy. The short crossing takes cars, cyclists and pedestrians across to Shell Bay, where the long beaches and heathland of Studland begin.

Studland Bay stretches for around four miles and combines sandy beaches with dunes, woodland and lowland heath. From South Beach, walkers can follow a 3.5-mile National Trust route to Old Harry Rocks for some of the best-known views on the Jurassic Coast.

Brownsea Island is another excellent day out. Ferries run from Poole, with the island offering woodland walks, lagoon habitats, birdlife and one of southern England's best-known populations of red squirrels.

Poole Quay provides restaurants, harbour cruises and maritime atmosphere, while Bournemouth adds shopping, entertainment and another long sweep of beach to the east.

For a group staying at Hook Sands, however, one of the greatest pleasures is not having to plan every day. The beach is outside the garden, watersports are close by and some of Dorset's finest coastal scenery is only a short ferry ride away.
